Thirty years have passed since the events of January 20, 1990, which have become a source of national pride as the embodiment of the struggle and courage of our people for independence. In this regard, President Ilham Aliyev has signed a special Order and a number of events are being carried out in the country and beyond in accordance with the adopted relevant Action Plan.

Commemoration events are held by the justice authorities on the anniversary of the tragedy, speeches are made by the justice officials and judges, special lectures are read at the Academy of Justice and the Training Centre of the Penitentiary Service, as well as documentary films about the bloody January massacre, including photo-slides are demonstrated.

As part of the ongoing events, the Ministry of Justice held a commemorative event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.

The event was attended by the Minister of Justice Fikrat Mammadov, deputy ministers and staff of the ministry, as well as young justice workers and volunteers and civil society representatives.

At the commemoration ceremony, it was announced that civilians were killed and hundreds of people were killed as a result of military aggression with the participation of Soviet troops on the night of the tragic night by violating the international law, the memory of our martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our people and the independence of our state was commemorated with a moment of silence.

It was emphasized that, the day after the murder, national leader Heydar Aliyev came to the country`s representation in Moscow with Ilham Aliyev and made a sharp statement regarding the massacre, and only a few years after the initiative of the Great Leader, the tragedy was given political-legal evaluation at the state level. The President of the country Mr. Ilham Aliyev is taking steps to make the international community aware of the true facts of this historic day, to perpetuate the memory of our martyrs, and to strengthen the protection of their families and the disabled persons. The First Vice-President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, headed by her, carry out important works in this area.

At the ceremony, a film about the bloody January tragedy was demonstrated, Nazim Abbasov, who was a member of republican investigation group and the head of the Investigation Department of the Ministry, the witnesses of the bloody events, members of the Public Committee under the Minister of Justice, civil

society representatives Saadet Bananyarli, Alimammad Nuriyev and Ahmad Abbasbayli shared their memories with the justice staff.

The speeches highlighted the fact that several people were wounded and brutally murdered on the streets, who were out in order to establish the justice of our people during the massacre. It was noted that, during this bloody action, numerous international documents on human rights, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were violated, a number of dark points in the investigation of criminal cases had been clarified, and it was noted that the use of armed forces against civilians has been proven by military offenses.

At the event it was noted that, the dear memory of our compatriots who died for the sake of national interests, will live forever in the hearts of every Azerbaijani and as always, on January 20 - the day of national mourning, justice workers will visit the Alley of Martyrs, where our heroic homeland sons sleep and which became a sacred place for our people.
