The 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice is being held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The international event, taking place from 26 September to 1 October, is being held under the theme “Accelerating crime prevention, criminal justice and the rule of law: protecting people and planet and achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the digital age.”
Azerbaijan is represented at the Congress by a delegation led by Minister of Justice Farid Ahmadov. The delegation includes representatives of the Ministries of Justice, Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs, the State Security Service, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Foreign Intelligence Service and other relevant institutions.
Farid Ahmadov addressed the high-level segment of the Congress as head of the Azerbaijani delegation.
In his address, the Minister briefed participants on the measures undertaken in Azerbaijan to combat crime, advance the digitalisation of the justice system, implement penitentiary reforms and strengthen international cooperation.
It was noted that Azerbaijan is developing electronic court and electronic enforcement systems, digital public services, as well as information exchange systems between law enforcement agencies. The introduction of videoconferencing capabilities across all courts has also yielded effective results in the provision of international legal assistance.
Emphasising the important role of international cooperation in addressing contemporary challenges related to crime, Farid Ahmadov highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation in the areas of extradition and mutual legal assistance.
Within the framework of the Congress, the Abu Dhabi Declaration, setting out further measures to prevent crime and advance criminal justice worldwide, was adopted.
It should be noted that, held every five years since 1955, the United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice is one of the main global platforms for the exchange of international experience and views on crime prevention and criminal justice.
